It’s raining sweets on the streets of Gràcia – the Sant Medir Festival
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 23 Jan 2012, 9:06 am CET
When: 3 March 2012, 8pm Where: Gràcia Who: For everyone Admission: Free
If you’re visiting Barcelona with kids, have a sweet tooth, or just want to experience a genuine and quirky tradition, we have the perfect event for you.
Called the Sant Medir Dolça Festa, this ‘sweet festival’ takes places in the neighbourhood of Gràcia every 3 March. It’s full of local colour and is a great way to experience Gràcia’s thriving sense of community.
|
|
|
|
Going strong since 1830
What is nowadays a mounted cavalcade of music, costume, and tonnes of sweets started off with fairly humble origins. Legend has it that the owner of a local bakery on Gran de Gràcia street fell sick. In dire need of a miracle, the baker invoked the help of Sant Medir, and promised to visit the saint’s shrine in the Collserola Mountains if he was cured. When the baker later regained his health he indeed set off on his first pilgrimage, on horseback, to the Collserola shrine.
The next year he was joined by his family, and over the years more and more people took part until the procession’s popularity spread throughout Gràcia and beyond.
|
|
|
Bring a brolly!
You’ll notice that people taking part are organised into several different groups or ‘collas’ – representatives of the local clubs that organise the event. The hundreds of revellers then parade around the barrio of Gràcia on horseback and atop floats, liberally chucking sweets at bystanders all the way (as the baker did on his original journey). Follow the locals’ lead and bring an upturned umbrella to catch as much loot as possible!
The main parade begins at around 8pm, at the intersection of Gran de Gràcia and Carrer de Maurizio Serrahima, and finishes up at Jardinets de Gràcia with a fireworks display.
Unlike some events in Barcelona, this festival isn’t well known outside of the city, and it’s still very much a community-based celebration like the ones in smaller Catalan towns. So if you want to experience an authentic festival with handfuls of free sweets up for grabs, make your way to the streets of Gràcia on 3 March.

La Boqueria – A Feast for the Senses
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 22 Jan 2012, 4:09 pm CET
Where? Off La Rambla, close to the Liceu metro station. For whom? Lovers of architecture and the finest in fresh ingredients. What? Barcelona’s premier market, described by Time Out magazine as “El millor mercat del món” (The best market in the world).
Situated just a few paces off Barcelona´s most famous street, La Rambla, lies La Boqueria – a must-see for any visitor to the city. This world-renowned market (part of a strong market tradition in Barcelona) is a tourist attraction in its own right, thus illustrating the impact that it has on those who pass under its Modernisme-influenced entrance.
|
|
![]() |
Entering La Boqueria is a sharply sensory experience. The first-time visitor is immediately taken aback by the sights, sounds and smells emanating from the vast array of stalls. There are numerous fruit stands situated at the front of the market, containing an almost overwhelming palate of colours. These stands offer freshly-squeezed fruit juices for €1.50, whilst pots of pineapple, melon and strawberries can be purchased for just €1. These come with a plastic fork, and make a refreshing accompaniment as you meander through the extensive variety of vendors.
The centre of the market is fittingly occupied by the many fishmongers, as this is perhaps the most frantic, vibrant area of the market. A wide range of fish, including everything from tuna to turbot, is delivered right in front of the customers. The fish are then washed, weighed, placed in ice and put on sale. The heads of the fish are not removed, therefore adding to the spectacle and to the sense of immediacy in this marketplace. The products are the freshest you will find anywhere, and the diversity of the ingredients is one reason that many of the city’s top chefs, including Ferran Adrià, buy their produce here. Furthermore, ´bacalao frito´ (fried cod) can be bought to take away, and this is a local favourite. Though this cod comes from the North Atlantic Sea, rather than the Mediterranean, it is often kept in salt to preserve its flavour; a technique picked up during the Roman occupation of the city.
Tip: You can save 10% on Cook and Taste cooking classes with the Oh-Barcelona discount card {What’s this?}

|
One of the prime joys to be taken from a visit to La Boqueria is the discovery of a range of rarities that one would not often expect to find under the same roof. Yet this incongruity does not lead to a disjointed feeling between the stalls, as they are all united in their passion for their product. One personal highlight was the stall selling huge, black, ostrich eggs, peopled by a couple of very chatty locals. This joie de vivre is one of the foremost reasons that this market is something of a photographer´s dream, a fact attested to by the droves of camera-toting tourists trying to capture the essence of La Boqueria. The finest in Spanish chorizo, Catalan delicacy fuet (a cured, dry sausage), and even eels are placed on sale in one legendary location. The products are markedly more expensive than the average supermarket, yet the customer can see (and smell) exactly why they are paying these premium prices. The only way to truly feel this unforgettable atmosphere is to visit La Boqueria and immerse yourself in this landmark attraction. Given its easy accessibility, this is truly one of the must-see sights in the city. Though the hectic activity of the market evokes a sense of flux, one thing has remained constant throughout the ages – the central position of La Boqueria, both geographically and figuratively, as the beating heart of Barcelona’s commerce.

Luggage lockers in Barcelona – your suitcases are safe!
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 20 Jan 2012, 4:56 pm CET
If there is one thing that everyone dreads when on holiday in a city it’s having to drag a suitcase around. Even for the most dedicated of travellers being stuck with your luggage can present a real problem. This isn’t a worry in Barcelona, as there are several luggage lockers in the city. These are the places which you should go to if you don’t know what to do before checking in or after checking out of your apartment
Oh-Barcelona’s clients have it easy – they can leave their suitcases in our offices, although only from Monday to Saturday from 11 – 20h. For other times, here are some other suggestions.
Leaving luggage at Barcelona’s Airport (El Prat)
El Prat airport has a dedicated storage area in Terminal 1B for those want to leave their suitcases. It’s located on the ground floor in T1on the lower level of the Plaza.
The lockers are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and there are three prices depending on the size of the luggage. The large locker costs €5.40, medium €4.80 and small €4.20 for 24 hours.
If you land in T2 you have two options, the first is to transfer to T1. The other option, usually more practical is to drop off your luggage at Sants train station on your way to the city centre.
Luggage lockers at Sants train station
Sants train station also has an area where you can deposit your luggage. It can be found next to McDonalds, so it shouldn’t be too hard to spot. The area is monitored by cameras 24hours a day, so you know that your suitcases will be in safe hands. This service is available 365 days of the year between 5.30 – 23h.

| Width | 50cm | 40cm |

Leaving luggage at Estació del Nord
You can also leave your bags and suitcases in this
train station between 5.30 -1h. The problem is that it’s not as
well connected as Sants, however it’s a good option if you’re
staying nearby or you need to catch a train.
In the Estació del Nord, as with Sants station, there are also special storage for other types of luggage and equipment such as skis or surfboards, it costs €5 to rent out these lockers.

| Height | 76cm | 91cm |
| Length | 61cm | 55cm |
| Width | 28cm | 51cm |

Luggage lockers in the city centre
There are a few places where you can leave luggage
in the city, for example, Bertan Sant Quay *Ferris, Barcelona Port,
is ideal for those travelling by boat. The prices are average, but
access to the lockers is only available between 9 – 13 and 16 – 23
hours.
The private luggage locker, Locker Barcelona, has a great advantage compared to the other places – it’s situated in the heart of Barcelona’s city centre, five minutes away from Plaça Catalunya, on 36 Carrer Structural, 08002. It’s open from 9.30 – 21h, although in the summer it opens one hour earlier and closes an hour later.
| Small | Large | Extra Large | |
| Height | 50cm | 80cm | 90cm |

| Width | 40cm | 40cm | 50cm |
| Price | 3.50€ | 5.50€ | 7.50€ |
The best thing of all… is the 3 for 2 special offer. Leave your suitcase there for three days and only pay for two. Also you’ll have unlimited access to your suitcases during the three days.
Now you have one less thing to worry about if you’re planning a trip to Barcelona! Everyone loves a bit of last minute souvenir shopping or sightseeing, but it’s always so much better without a suitcase in tow!

The Top 6 Paella restaurants in Barcelona
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 20 Jan 2012, 12:36 pm CET
Barcelona is not only a city famous for Modernism and sunny beaches. As well as being a cult centre for worshippers of Gaudi, the Catalan capital offers the utmost in the region’s culture of gastronomy. Paella may not be a specialty for Cataluña in the same way as Fuet for example, however the city’s restaurants have continuously reinvented their recipes and offer succulent Paellas waiting to be discovered! But with so many tourist traps as well as the more ‘typical’ restaurants where can you find a really good Paella in Barcelona?
Oh-Barcelona has come to the rescue!
A little more information…
But where does Paella actually come from ?
Originally from the region of Valencia, “Paella” means ‘frying pan’ in the Valencian language. It is said that the dish dates back to the XV and XVI centuries in rural Valencia. At the time the population would prepare rice with any local produce they had at hand (chicken, rabbit, vegetables etc…). Paella therefore originated as “a dish for the poor” which is an ironic thought nowadays when it is quite often one of the most expensive dishes on the menu!
|
|
|
Today paella is unquestionably one of the most popular dishes in Spanish cuisine. In Spain it was traditionally eaten on Thursdays, and each region has its own recipes. Cataluña is no exception and the secrets of the Paella de Barcelona will be revealed a little later in the article…
Learn to cook a real Paella de Barcelona
To learn to cook the regional Paella and a number of other typical Catalan specialties ask for the advice of a great chef! Cook and Taste offers private cooking lessons in the centre of Barcelona. To find out more check out their Website .
Info: Save 10% on cooking classes at Cook and Taste with the Oh-Barcelona discount card {What’s this?}
If you are not currently in Barcelona but still would like to taste the real Catalan Paella at home it is quite simple – the unique recipe can be found at this address. Happy cooking!
|
|
Last but not least we will wish you ‘bon appétit!’ or as they say in Barcelona “Bon Profit” ! If you know any other recommendable Paella restaurants in Barcelona, let us know by leaving us a little comment at the bottom of the page. Any original Paella recipes are also more than welcome!

On this tour, after a comfortable drive through the
picturesque villages dotting the highways, you make your way up the
mountain to the breathtaking peaks of Montserrat.
Rising majestically, 1235 metres from the ground, Montserrat, a
UNESCO world heritage site, has been a sacred spot
and a must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona since its rediscovery
in the 12th century.
Montserrat (meaning jagged rocks) is the site of the Royal Basilica (1592) which welcomes an average of 3.2 million visitors per year and is home to the black virgin – a statue that attracted countless followers down a rocky path to the cave where the icon was hidden for over 800 years. Another top attraction is the choir and their famous performances held most days at 12 Noon. However, Montserrat is more than just religious icons, 12th century Romanesque carving, and impressive churches. This sacred spot is a favourite with nature lovers and those in search of a higher power.
Upon your arrival at Montserrat your tour guide will explain the history of the mountain and take you up to the main square. You will then be given free time to see the churches and with a bit of luck, get to hear the choir. From there you have the option to continue onwards and upwards to the top of Montserrat via the funicular which makes its way up the side of the mountain and acts as a moving observation deck with stunning views.
If you choose to take the trip to the top of these
asymmetrical rock formations you will be rewarded with entrance to
the visitor centre which explains the legends of over 20 different
rock formations. Several nature tracks offer rewarding views as you
take a walk on high what an afternoon under the blue skies
of Catalonia can do for the spirit.

Three days in Barcelona – delve into the heart of the city – day one
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 14 Jan 2012, 9:25 am CET
To claim that you’ve ‘seen’ Barcelona may not be possible. As regular visitors and residents will tell you, this city offers something new on a day-by-day, and street-by-street, basis. But for those of you on a tight schedule, at Oh-Barcleona.com we´ve decided to put our heads together to attempt the nigh-on impossible task of distilling the best that Barcelona has to offer into a 3-day itinerary.
Day One
Take a quick glance at a map of Barcelona and you’ll notice how the city fans out towards the mountains from a nucleus of entangled streets. This nucleus is the Ciutat Vella, the ‘old town’, and this part of the city will be the focus of your first day. The area provides an ideal starting point for visiting Barcelona, as it not only demonstrates the origins of the city, but is also brimming with iconic sights.
09:00 Navigate Las Ramblas
Make your way to Plaça de Catalunya, which sits on the edge of the old town and is the main transport hub. From here you can walk down Las Ramblas, the world’s best-known tree-lined avenue. This street is always awash with tourists, so it’s easy to be swept along by the crowds, past all the flower stalls and street performers. On your way down Las Ramblas keep an eye out for the pavement mosaics by surrealist master Joan Miró.
Your most important stop, though, will be the Mercat de la Boquería, Europe’s largest food market – the perfect place to pick up some local produce and a freshly made fruit juice to keep you going.
10:00 Relax in the squares of Gótico
It’s time to take a left turn into the Gótico (the Gothic quarter). Just off Las Ramblas you’ll find the splendid Plaça Reial, a neoclassical gem that happens to contain Antoni Gaudí’s first work in the city – the lampposts by the central fountain. Take this opportunity to grab a coffee in one of the cafés that line this teeming square.
The Gótico has numerous one-off boutiques and galleries which are great for nosing around in. Carrer de Ferran is particularly good for window shopping and at the end of this street is Plaça de Sant Jaume, Barcelona´s civic square. Here you’ll find the Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of the Catalan government, with the city’s town hall opposite.
11:00 Meet the geese in the cloister
From this square, veer left onto Carrer del Bisbe, where you’ll see a much-photographed Gothic-style arch, and come out in front of the 13th-century Cathderal. (Or, Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, to give it its full name). As the most prominent Catalan Gothic building in the city, the Cathedral is awe-inspiring on both the outside and the inside. Its numerous chapels, dedicated to individual saints, are all remarkable works of craftsmanship in their own right, and you’re likely to see devout visitors taking a moment with their favoured saint.
The cloister also houses a surprising bunch of residents – 13 geese, one for each year in the life of Saint Eulàlia, the church’s martyr namesake. Particularly in the summer this part of Barcelona can feel a bit claustrophobic – to help you get your bearings above the warren of the old town, take a lift to the cathedral’s roof. If you’re keen to find a part of the Gótico for a moment’s peace and quiet seek out the haunting tranquillity of Plaça de Sant Felip Neri.
_
13.30 Enjoy lunch like a local
Hungry? Well, you’re in the right place – there’s no shortage of choice when it comes to food in the old town. To avoid the more tourist-oriented eateries in the Gótico, you could head across Via Laietana to Born – eating here will give you a better chance of mingling with the locals. For tapas try Bubó or for plentiful, good-value portions of paella in an intimate setting try Mar de la Ribera. When eating out at lunchtime it’s a good idea to look for a set menu, or ‘menu del diá’, which can easily fill you up for a reasonable price.
15:00 Get some divine inspiration
After taking your time over lunch, begin to explore the Born district. For several decades the area has been buzzing with artistic activity and offers a quieter, more authentic alternative to the Gótico. However it’s just as steeped in history. In contrast to the cathedral you visited in the morning, the church of Santa María del Mar, on Passeig del Born, is a more austere but equally inspiring piece of gothic architecture. The story of this church has inspired a prize-winning novel and the proportions of its interior are widely considered an example of medieval architecture par excellence.
16:00 Rumage about in the Born
Emerge from the light and airy interior and look for Carrer Montcada which starts just behind the church. This street is crammed with museums and galleries. It’s also interesting in its own right, with some of the best examples of secular medieval architecture in the city. The main attraction on this street is the Museu Picasso, exhibiting the painter’s earlier works, and is a must for fans of this incredibly influential figure. Montcada is also home to the Disseny Hub, with a fine collection of design and applied arts, and the Museu Barbier-Mueller d’ art Precolombí, a well-regarded collection of pre-Colombian works. Let yourself get lost in one of these great collections.
17:00 Gawp at Catalan craftsmanship
The Born district extends further inland, where its pedestrianised streets gradually become more residential and lined with small bars and fruit shops. Carrer Sant Pere Mes Alt has one of the best buildings in the entire city – the Palau de la Música Catalana. If you have time, a tour of this unbelievably decadent Modernista concert hall is worthwhile (although don’t forget to buy your tickets in advance). If not, just admiring the façade of this shrine to Catalan culture is an event in itself.
_
_
18:00 Cool down by the sea
That’s almost it for day one…
For the perfect tonic after a day’s pounding the city streets, hop on the metro from the nearby Urquinaona station on line 4 to Barceloneta. This will bring you out near the city’s stylishly renovated waterfront. The laid-back atmosphere of this area makes it one of the best spots in the city to sip a drink and look back at the old town. There are loads of options for dinner, particularly when it comes to seafood. Don´t forget that that in Catalonia, like the rest of Spain, people tend to eat dinner later in the evening. If your appetite returns with a vengeance, we recommend an excellent Indian restaurant (its tasting menu is real treat). Otherwise, as you might expect, seafood restaurants predominate in this part of the city. Can Maño is a truly authentic Barcelonan place to eat – book ahead to avoid disappointment in this extremely popular and slightly raucous restaurant.
What did you think of day 1? Feel free to post your comment below if you think there’s anything we should add. Or, if you’re up for day 2, let’s go

Sitges carnival – Catalonia’s craziest festival!
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 13 Jan 2012, 11:53 am CET
When: 16 to 22 February 2012 Where: Sitges, 35 km south of Barcelona Who would enjoy it?: Party goers, the curious, Latin music lovers and the gay community! Price: Completely free!
There are few small towns that can boast a world famous carnival. Sitges (population 28,000) may well be the exception to the rule, hosting the Sitges Carnival – an extravaganza of colour and hedonism to rival any city.
From 16 to 22 February Barcelona’s small neighbour comes alive with a series of events that together draw around 300,000 people. These throngs of pleasure-seekers come to experience what many claim is the most decadent and wild event of its kind in Europe.
Since it became a countercultural haven of tolerance in the otherwise grim Franco era, Sitges has become a mecca for the gay community and this carnival has become a highpoint on the international gay calendar.
So what can you expect from it? An eclectic mix of scantily clad revellers in outrageous costumes, almost constant street music, and parade after parade. The largest of these, the Rua de la Disbauxa (the parade of debauchery) contains over forty floats. The events are also known for being safe, a fact that is attributed to the fun-loving, inclusive atmosphere on which Sitges prides itself.
Other highlights during the festivities include a fireworks display after the election of the king and queen of the carnival, a children’s carnival and the Rua de l’Extermini (the parade of extermination) which is usually packed with drag queens mourning the symbolic end of the fun. In a slightly surreal finale on Ash Wednesday, an effigy of a sardine is buried on the beach. (Apparently this originates from the practice of giving up sardines for lent.)
Whether you want to dive into the full week of debauchery or just get a sample of this unforgettable event, a visit to Sitges, just 30 minutes south of Barcelona, is highly recommended.

|
|
|
How to get there
By far the
easiest and most efficient way of getting to Sitges is by train
using RENFE (Spain’s biggest train company) there are trains

main station Sants Estacio
and Passeig de
Gracia, which are situated right in the centre of Barcelona.

The Top 6 Paella restaurants in Barcelona
Oh-Barcelona - The Blog 5 Jan 2012, 12:36 pm CET
|
|
|
Info: Save 10% on cooking classes at Cook and Taste with the Oh-Barcelona discount card {What’s this?}
If you are not currently in Barcelona but still would like to taste the real Catalan Paella at home it is quite simple – the unique recipe can be found at this address.
|
|
